Sophia Hayden Bennett

Sophia Hayden Bennett (October 17, 1868 – February 3, 1953) was the first American woman to receive an architecture degree.

Bennett was born in Santiago, Chile. She graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1890 with a degree in architecture. She is best known for designing the Woman's Building at the World's Columbian Exposition, designing the building when she was just 21. She received $1,000 at the time for the design, when male architects earned ten times as much. Bennett died in 1953 in Winthrop, Massachusetts.

Isabel Allende

Country of origin: Chile

Isabel Allende Llona (born in Lima, Peru on August 2, 1942) is a Chilean writer with American citizenship. Allende, whose works sometimes contain aspects of the "magic realist" tradition, is famous for novels such as The House of the Spirits (La casa de los espĂ­ritus) (1982) and City of the Beasts (La ciudad de las bestias) (2002), which have been commercially successful. Allende has been called "the world’s most widely read Spanish-language author". In 2010 she received Chile's National Literature Prize. In 2004, Allende was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
